Is this chart still right for a short session? Yes. Every cell is the higher of two exact numbers for that hand in isolation, so it is the best decision whether it is your first hand or your millionth. What changes over a short session is not the decisions but the objective: instead of minimizing loss per hand forever, you are trying to hit a target before a stop. That is a solved problem too.
Bold play (Dubins & Savage, 1965). Proven theorem: in a game tilted against you, the strategy that maximizes your chance of reaching a target before going broke is to bet as boldly as allowed. Every extra hand you spend grinding is another toll paid to the edge; big presses shorten the session and starve the house of time. This is the formal justification for the Paroli press.
Gambler's ruin. With win chance p per resolved bet (about 47.4% here) and q = 1−p, the chance of winning W units before losing L is (1−(q/p)L) / (1−(q/p)L+W). The formula shows why pressing works: measured in effective steps, bold betting makes W and L small, and small exponents keep you close to the fair-game answer.
Risk-adjusted deviations (tournament theory). When two actions are within a point or two of EV — 9 vs 3, 12 vs 3, the soft doubles, 8,8 vs 10 — variance is the tiebreaker. One base-bet win from your walk-away target: decline the marginal double, you need a win, not a 2× swing. Far behind with the stop looming: take every marginal double and split — near-free variance is exactly what bold play tells you to buy. The EV chips in the trainer show you how close each call is.
A real few-hands trick. In a live 8-deck shoe your own cards change the deck. A 16 against a ten is normally a hair-thin hit, but a 16 made of three or more cards (7-5-4) has eaten the small cards you would need to survive the hit: stand instead. Correct on hand one of a session.
The boundary. Everything above shapes a slightly unfair gamble; none of it flips the sign. The only mathematics that produces a genuine player edge is card counting — adjusting play and bets to the cards already gone — and it requires a hand-shuffled shoe, deep penetration, patience, and a bet spread the house tolerates. Short of that, the honest statement of your position is: near coin-flip odds, purchased at about 0.6% per unit wagered, with the exit discipline doing the rest.
